Obviously, I can’t get enough of Charles Demuth day on Cave to Canvas. Let’s hope there’s a Marsden Hartley day soon. He made many watercolors of nightclub scenes and vaudeville performers around the same time as he produced this one. This work also relates to his sexually suggestive drawings of men in bath-houses, although here the eroticism is understated rather than explicit, since one does not immediately notice the male-male sailor couple dancing in the center.
