Obviously, I can’t get enough of Charles Demuth day on Cave to Canvas. Let’s hope there’s a Marsden Hartley day soon. BTW, if you want to know more about this, there is a great book about these artists and their history here.

From the Cleveland Museum of Art: Dancing Sailors was no doubt inspired by Demuth’s frequent forays into New York City’s night life. He made many watercolors of nightclub scenes and vaudeville performers around the same time as he produced this one. This work also relates to his sexually suggestive drawings of men in bath-houses, although here the eroticism is understated rather than explicit, since one does not immediately notice the male-male sailor couple dancing in the center.
